{"id":7420,"date":"2019-08-07T12:48:47","date_gmt":"2019-08-07T11:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/parisx.me\/?p=7420"},"modified":"2019-08-08T03:05:45","modified_gmt":"2019-08-08T02:05:45","slug":"17th-open-and-user-innovation-conference-news-and-impressions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/parisx.me\/en\/17th-open-and-user-innovation-conference-news-and-impressions\/","title":{"rendered":"17th Open and User Innovation Conference \u2013 News and Impressions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/oui2019\/homepage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">17th<strong> International Open and User Innovation (OUI) Conference<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> took place last month at the beautiful city of Utrecht (the Netherlands). It was the fourth time I attended the meeting of this community and I was glad to see it\u2019s growing. It was also nice to see that share similar research directions with some of the participants. I presented the methodology of the \u201cContribution Matrix,\u201d based on a paper we submitted with Kevin Desouza at the <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieee-tems.org\/ieee-transactions-on-engineering-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> last June.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>The OUI community<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The OUI community started up during the early millennium, mainly around the seminal work <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.mit.edu\/evhippel\/www\/books\/DI\/DemocInn.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Democratizing Innovation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> by Eric von Hippel (2005), as well as the book Open Innovation by Henry Chesbrough (2003). Its framework is summarized by the following model (Raasch and von Hippel, 2012):<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7421\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7421\" class=\"wp-image-7421 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hippel-use-produce-1024x495.jpg\" alt=\"User Innovation\" width=\"1024\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hippel-use-produce-1024x495.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/parisx.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hippel-use-produce-300x145.jpg 300w, https:\/\/parisx.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hippel-use-produce.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">User and Producer Innovation Paradigms (Raasch and von Hippel, 2012).<\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The conference was hosted by the University of Utrecht in one of the most historical buildings of the city and addressed a large variety of themes, ranging from Crowdsourcing, Institutions, Healthcare and Toolkits to OUI Platforms, Governance and Organization Design. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In brief, there are two major thesis here. On the one hand, indeed users <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>do innovate<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (von Hippel, 1977). On the other hand, enterprises could do more <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/2019\/04\/21\/open-innovation-on-the-boundaries-a-research-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>if they open up their boundaries<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (Chesbrough, 2003). On this basis, numerous studies explore the specifics of each innovation paradigm. In the Open Innovation framework, enterprises have to see beyond their walls and exchange knowledge and ideas with others to integrate them into new products and services. In the User Innovation paradigm, innovations emerge from <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>lead users<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, who freely share them with their peers: in theory, use-related innovations come from users while technology-related ones come from manufacturers (von Hippel, 1994).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Impressions<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Overall, most presentations by young scholars were interesting, illustrating important theoretical ambitions. Interestingly, there were many presentations on <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/devs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">developer innovation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, too. For instance, developers in Python still come from different backgrounds, as one can find among them both university graduates and self-taught developers (Wang and Tambe, 2019). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Another presentation I particularly appreciated was about a seminar organized by and for cancer patients along with courageous health professionals (Sanden et\u00a0al., 2019). The study described an active learning experience, where the identities of both the patients and the professionals were challenged. This presentation made me think about the epistemological discussion about standard and contemporary sciences we open <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/contemporaryepistemology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>in our recent collective book<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>,<\/strong> mainly in what concerns the formation of identities (Chrysos and Gentes, 2019). That seminar surely is an initiative to follow up.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The keynote speak by physicist Christoph Stampfer was also very interesting. It was about the App <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/phyphox.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">phyphox<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> he developed with a small team. Phyphox is an open source application which takes into advantage the hardware of a smart phone to operate elementary Physics experiments. Unlike consumers, phyphox developers didn\u2019t content themselves with pre-existing Physics Apps. They looked under their thumb to see the set of instruments inside the smart phone (accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, light sensor etc.) and do something on their own with that. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Initially developed for Stampfer\u2019s own use, the App gathered an international techer community contributing new experimental protocols. Thus, students can have in their pockets a laboratory comparable to the ones disposed by schools.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It was interesting to see in this particular field what I describe <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/2014\/01\/22\/when-users-create-industries-the-case-of-web-based-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">in my thesis<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> as the \u201cUser-Developer-Entrepreneur\u201d (UDE) phase: today some users ask for customer support, just like consumers. Yet, since providing customer services is not interesting for Prof. Stampfer himself, an entrepreneurial schema has to be invented for the community to expand. The tiny group of UDEs has to give its place to one of Developers-Entrepreneurs (DE) putting aside their personal preferences to serve the consumers (see figure bellow) (Chrysos, 2013, 2015):<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7424\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7424\" class=\"wp-image-7424 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hippel-chrysos-1024x713.jpg\" alt=\"Developer Innovation\" width=\"1024\" height=\"713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hippel-chrysos-1024x713.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/parisx.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hippel-chrysos-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/parisx.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hippel-chrysos.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Developer Innovation, in-between the two paradigms: User-Developer, User-Developer-Entrepreuner, Developer-Entrepreuner (Chrysos, 2013).<\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">There also was a surprising presentation by an economist, who said that most of the dimensions of user innovation revealed by the research of the OUI community (e.g. on motivations) would just be ignored once an econometric model gets established. It was interesting to see, however, how econometric models are set up, taking into account what is there, testing parameters, cutting off others to finally keep those one just can\u2019t cut off, as well as the relevant ones.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>The News<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The important news, however, is that new horizons for innovation policies open up at an international level. The OECD <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/science\/oslo-manual-2018-9789264304604-en.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPS-ItalicMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Oslo Manual<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> on the measurement of innovation has recently broaden its scope, now talking about innovating \u201cunits.\u201d Thus, governments should take into account <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>household innovation<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> for the design of their future policies, too. This evolution unfolds further research perspectives, including the potential for <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/devs\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">developer innovation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> to become more visible. It came after decades of research on the field, as well as years of discussion of prominent members of the OUI community with OECD analysts, among others. I\u2019m quite proud to have contributed in those discussions <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/2016\/11\/18\/foggy-economy-the-challenges-of-the-expansion-of-emerging-technology-and-the-innovative-action-of-developers\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">with the presentation around my book at a humble seminar<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> at the Directorate of Sciences, Technologies and Innovation of the OECD here in Paris some years ago (Chrysos, 2016).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>My Contribution<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">At this conference I presented a methodology on analyzing emergent technologies, of which <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3082301\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">an early version<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> I had already discussed with the colleagues of the <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cord.asu.edu\/home\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Center for Organizational Research and Design<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> during <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/2017\/10\/26\/visiting-arizona-state-university\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">my visit at the ASU<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> a couple of years ago. The standard method of analysing technologies in this community is the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) (Baldwin and Clark, 2000; Steward, 1981), identifying and representing the relationships between the different features of a technology. However, \u201cwhen the underlying technologies are rapidly changing and becoming more complex\u201d there\u2019s a need for better solutions (Colfer and Baldwin, 2016).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So, the presentation of our study (which you can download <a href=\"https:\/\/halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr\/halshs-02198379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> for free) was based on the paper we elaborated with <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staff.qut.edu.au\/staff\/kevin.desouza\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Kevin Desouza<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, whom I met at ASU. In fact, a set of dimensions we had tackled with Kevin before submitting our paper at the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management also came up at the discussion that followed my presentation, mainly on the difference between the DSM and methods based on bipartite graphs (Danilovic and Browning, 2007; Suh, 1990). In addition, we discussed about the process of standardization of nano-satellites and the work I did in collaboration with Nikitas Chronas and Apostolos Masiakos that I presented last year <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/2018\/06\/30\/how-to-miniaturize-satellites\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">at CalPoly<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> and <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/parisx.me\/2018\/10\/07\/nasaacademy\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">at the NASA<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (Chrysos et\u00a0al., 2018a, 2018b). I also had the occasion to meet academic engineers interested in the nano-satellite phenomenon from the standard space industry perspective and exchange on historical examples of industrial emergence I studied in my thesis, such as the early era of the PC.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Other than that, I took the time to hang around Utrecht and I also had the chance to climb the famous Dom Tower. I walked a lot along the wonderful canals which used to turn the entire city a major port before Amsterdam becomes an even more important one. Utrecht is probably lucky not to have an airport, as, despite its beauty, it\u2019s not packed with tourists, and its residents can enjoy a high quality of life. I met Timo for a beer who told me about his hands-on innovation experience in the banking sector. He got back to Utrecht and found this job he really likes, just three weeks after graduating the Master <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iscparis.com\/formations\/master-grande-ecole\/programme\/specialisations-ecole-commerce\/innovation-in-european-business-masters-of-business-studies-ieb\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: CourierNewPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u201cInnovation in European Business\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Overall, the organisation of the conference was perfect and I was very glad to see that the community is doing well.
